Asher Roth Is Going To be a Huge Star...
Whether you, me or anyone we know likes it or not.
He's already well known but I mean, he's like a mixtape away from being an annoying, on the tv, internet and radio every 5 minutes type of star.
Dude obviously has a hell of a team behind him. Not only was he already an indie darling and getting props and great reviews and showing all the signs of being that overnight superstar that comes along every now and then, but over the last few months he's been all over the place.
Recently, A Guitarist from his "band" heroicly foiled a possible terrorist on a recent flight from Atlanta to Los Angeles.
The other day he was on the Carson Daily show where Carson slobbered all over him while telling him he had "big shoes to fill" (a reference to Eminem, who Carson hilariously called the "Jackie Robinson of Hip Hop"):
Before that he appeared on the cover of XXL:
And on Wednesday MTV did a MC's to Watch Profile on him
so clearly his publicity team is not messing around in 2009.
Now I've heard alot but not all of his music and he's talented, but personally, I can't stand feeling like a rapper or an singer or cartoon or cleaning product or fad is being forced on me.
Also, I usually only listen to no more than 3 underground, indie, hipster, myspace-facebook-twitter sensations at a time and in 2008 I picked Wale, Charles Hamilton(under protest), and Joe Budden. And granted Budden is not new, but he's certainly carved himself a new internet niche and identity so he counts.
I guess I was so busy co-signing those 3 that all my Asher Roth mixtapes have collected dust (metaphorically because it's an mp3) and not because I have a real problem with him, Asher Roth is a good rapper, I can’t front. He's a really clever lyricist and I find what he does to be refreshing.
But again, I really just can't stand the idea of several sources at a time telling me how great something is and how I "need" to get on board with it.
So now I HAVE to check out ALL of my Asher Roth stuff as I'm convinced that this dude is CLEARLY not going away anytime soon and I want to be able to intelligently hate on him for being so popular after he wins his Grammy Award for best new artist when he drops his album.
A Grammy, watch. I've seen this before.
If you havn't heard about him, check out Asher Roths Myspace
