Monday Munchies - Jalapeño Jack Sun Chips

I've always been a fan of Sun Chips.  When they made their debut on the snack marketplace they provided a refreshing counterbalance to the tortilla and potato chips that glutted the market.  They had a unique texture and a distinct flavor.  I was a fan of the Harvest Cheddar variety.

Of course that was years ago.  Now there are tons of alternatives to tortilla chips and potato chips and Sun Chips have sort of fallen out of favor.  The Garden Salsa flavor does nothing for me.  Still, when I saw the Jalapeño Jack bag, I was intrigued.

Now a few years ago I had a nasty run in with jalapeños.  It involved them being too hot of me, me trying to preserve my manhood by deciding to swallow rather than chew them and the unpleasant discovery that chewing is a vital part of the "breaking down" process.

Needless to say, it was a painful discovery and I sort of cringed at the thought of jalapeño Sun Chips.

But on the other hand I love Jack.  I'm still mourning the demise of Jumpin' Jack Cheese Doritos.  So the idea of Jack cheese Sun Chips had me salivating.

The reality of the chip is that they do have the jalapeño kick.  It hits right in the back of the mouth and lingers for a spell.  It's not unbearably hot, but it is jalapeño hot.

And the jack flavor is gloriously present.  It really compliments the jalapeño quite well.  It's a bold flavor and it provides balance for the kick.  But it's still jack enough to satiate the cravings of a guy who's been missing the combination of jack and crunch for decades.

Now I grabbed my bag of these chips about a month ago, and I haven't seen a bag since.  Which sucks because I'm really a fan.  Like I wish I could track down another bag or possibly a stockpile so I could create a stash.

Don't make the same mistake I made; if you find them, stock up.

  1. Interesting. I like Sun Chips, but I find that the multi-grain flavor kind of overpowers everything else. As a result, I stick to the Original flavor and have been underwhelmed by the Harvest Cheddar and Garden Salsa.

I, too, long for the Jumpin Jack Doritos days, so I'll pick up a bag of these tonight.

  2. I disagree. I have had all flavors and the Garden Salsa is my favorite.
