Skip's Emmy™ Hopes

Since the Emmy's are tonight I figured I'd offer up my thoughts on some of the televised awards. I'm a dude who watches plenty of tv and I'm actually a fan of quite a few of the nominated shows.

So prepare for the best blog post on the Emmy's that you've read all year!




(Actually, I thought about it and then decided against it, but when Entertainment Weekly put together their Emmy Ballot 2009 I felt obligated to do a write up. Then I procrastinated until the 11th hour and threw this together.)

Supporting Actress in a Comedy: Kristin Chenoweth (Pushing Daisies), Jane Krakowski (30 Rock), Elizabeth Perkins (Weeds), Amy Poehler (Saturday Night Live), Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live), Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty)

Deep in my heart I want Kristin Chenoweth to win.



I really, really do. But I don't think she will. Perkins gets saddled with lame storylines, Poehler is basically nominated for half a season and Williams doesn't have the buzz. I don't think anyone will vote for Krakowski because Wiig is hogging all of the hype. But Wiig is mad funny.



Supporting Actor in a Comedy: Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men), Kevin Dillon (Entourage), Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), Jack McBrayer (30 Rock), Tracy Morgan (30 Rock), Rainn Wilson (The Office)

For me it's a two-man race Wilson vs Harris. Morgan and McBrayer are basically playing versions of themselves. Actually so is Dillon. And who knows how Cryer got nominated. I'm pulling for Wison but I think Harris will probably win because I've yet to hear a bad thing about the guy.

Actress in a Comedy: Christina Applegate (Samantha Who?), Toni Collette (United States of Tara), Tina Fey (30 Rock), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine), Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds), Sarah Silverman (The Sarah Silverman Program)

This is sort of a tough race for me. I'm a fan of Louis-Dreyfus and Silverman from their previous stuff and Collette and Patker's current stuff. Applegate I could care less about. I do think that Tara and Weeds strays too far into drama which hurts Collette and Parker.

Plus Fey won last year.

Actor in a Comedy: Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Steve Carell (The Office), Jermaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords), Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), Tony Shalhoub (Monk), Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men)

Shalhoub is overrated. Sheen's nomination is a mystery to me. Parsons is supposed to be funny, but I've never seen his show. I think it's between Carell and Baldwin. I wouldn't mind if Clement won, but I'm going for Carell.

Supporting Actress in a Drama: Rose Byrne (Damages), Hope Davis (In Treatment), Cherry Jones (24), Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy), Dianne Wiest (In Treatment), Chandra Wilson (Grey's Anatomy)

I used to be a fan of all of these shows. I missed In Treatment's second season, but I'm sure Davis and Weist were stellar. I dug Jones' work, but don’t if it's worth an award. Same with Byrne, but I wouldn't mind if she won. I don't like Oh. I'm really pulling for Wilson.

Supporting Actor in a Drama: Christian Clemenson (Boston Legal), Michael Emerson (Lost), William Hurt (Damages), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), William Shatner (Boston Legal), John Slattery (Mad Men)

Right off the bat I'm dismissing anyone from Boston Legal. I thought that Emerson and Hurt did really fine jobs and could certainly win. Slattery is always awesome. But I'm really pulling for Paul.

He had a standout season and really deserves the award.

Actress in a Drama: Glenn Close (Damages), Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters), Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: Special Victim's Unit), Holly Hunter (Saving Grace), Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men), Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer)

For me it's a race between Close and Moss, mostly because I've never seen or can't stand the other shows. Close always knocks it out of the park, but I'm going for Moss because her role requires more nuances.
Actor in a Drama: Simon Baker (The Mentalist), Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Hugh Laurie (House)

I'm sick of hearing about Baker and Laurie. Byrne is great, but I missed this past season. I think it's between Hamm and Cranston. I love Hamm and Cranston won last year. But Cranston's acting on Breaking Bad's second season was paralleled only by his costar Aaron Paul. It's Cranston's award.

Best Comedy: 30 Rock, Entourage, Family Guy, Flight of the Conchords, How I Met Your Mother, The Office, Weeds

I don't know if you've heard, but I hate Family Guy. I'm not that fond of Entourage and I've never seen How I Met Your Mother. Weeds wasn't that funny this past season. The Office or 30 Rock? 30 Rock or The Office? Six of one, half a dozen of the other. Um, I'm going to say 30 Rock.



Best Drama:
Big Love, Breaking Bad, Damages, Dexter, House, Lost, Mad Men

I've heard Big Love rocked, but I missed the season.

I hate House's hype. Lost stepped it up and Dexter was good but they wasn't near the caliber of Breaking Bad, Damages and Mad Men. Damages was strong and Mad Men stayed the course, but Breaking Bad's second season really elevated it to a place on my Mt Rushmore of TV Drama. Breaking Bad is the winner.
